Story – Werewolf Hunters April 24, 2009

It was a mid autumn night. A man was walking in the forest with his back bended. Darkness sheltered him and he was hidden in a bush. He, Daniel, was following the track of the man before him. They went into a strangely vacant place in the woods. Daniel hid himself behind the tree, monitoring the odd-behaving person. Then there the man stood, when the full moon light came out from the cloud, and with a strange roar tumbled out from his mouth, the man, once a friend of Daniel, slowly changed into a murderer, or a ……

A month ago, Daniel came to this small town in Romania with his partners. They were werewolf hunters, searching for the escaped monster. They tracked the footprint for all night, and they chased the werewolf to the gate of a town.

“That monster must be in this town.” said Eric with anger. “We’ve been following him for months. Now we have to wait for the next full moon, but we don’t have any money to stay in an inn.”

“Don’t worry about that,” replied Daniel, who was their captain. “I’ll go seek for help.”

Then he asked a man who is a resident in the town whether anyone could help them.

“If you’re seeking for help, sir, you should go to the mayor.” the man said. “I’m sure that he can help you. People in my town always rely on him when we are in trouble.” All the people around them agreed. Then the man showed them the way to the mayor’s house.

When they arrived at the mayor’s house, they thought they would see a beautiful, luxurious palace with lots of police guarding its front door. But they were wrong. They saw a cottage with some flowers and vines climbing all over it. There wasn’t any police standing outside, but some villagers walked by.

“He must be a nice man.” Daniel thought. “He is so friendly to the villagers. Maybe he can help us.”

They walked toward the door and knocked.

“Who’s this? My door is always open to my people. You don’t have to knock!”

It was the sound of an old man. Then the door slowly opened. The hunters saw an old man with white hair, great white beard and a nice but exhausted face that made him looked like Santa. His badge shined on his chest.

“Well, what’s going on? Who are you?” said the old man.

Daniel told the old man about their mission of hunting the werewolf, and the difficulties they were facing. They thought the man would think that they are crazy, but actually, he invited them in to his house without hesitation.

“Come on in, then. I like gusts from other countries. By the way, I’m Aaron.”

When they walked in to Aaron’s house they thought that he was really a man who likes clean and neatness – all of his things were put neatly. Books, vases, chairs, cups, all were neatly arranged in the room. Eric noticed that there was a statue of Jesus. He also saw bibles on the desk and shelf. He seemed to be a devout Christian. Eric also saw some specimens of animals head. Then Aaron told them that the dinner was served. The servants quickly set the table and served some wonderful food. Strangely, the tableware was not made by silver, but other kind of metal.

“Now, let’s dig in!” said Aaron

Everyone did so expect Eric. He felt strange. He wanted to talk to Daniel about his doubt. But Daniel was busy trying to persuade the mayor to offer a shelter for him and his crews. Aaron, again, said “yes” to his request. All the people became dizzy after some wine. But the mayor seemed sober. He told them about his effort in protecting wild beasts.

“Animals, like man, should have the right to exist in this world.” he concluded.

When everyone was going to bed, Daniel saw Aaron was about to go out. He asked him where he wanted to go. Aaron said that he would go around and check if everyone in the village was save, and that he would do it every day.

One day, Aaron asked Daniel about his motivation of hunting werewolves.

“t was such a mourning memory,” Daniel sighed. “When I was only a fifteen-year-old boy, a couple of werewolves appeared in Prague, my hometown. Those hideous beasts killed my beloved parents and made my dearest brother into a werewolf. He, no, it became one of them. Thanks my mom asked me to the wine-vault, I survived with loneliness.”

“I’m really sad to hear that. How about your brother, then?” asked Aaron.

“I felt not only helpless, but also hopeless. Once, I even wanted to suicide. But when I heard that the three monsters continually killed many people in my hometown, I told myself I should stop them, in order to cease another tragedy happening. I found the den of the werewolves and killed two of them, yes, just so you think, I didn’t shot my brother. Not due to my sympathy, it just escaped.” Daniel said without any emotions. “I became a werewolf hunter. My duty is to protect innocent people from attacking by werewolves.”

“Perhaps, the duty is just an excuse, right? The main reason you became a hunter is to find your brother out, though you are reluctant to admit it. Am I right?”

Daniel silenced.

“Family and love are both complicated relationships.” Aaron said, looking at the cloud in the sky. “Maybe, so does friendship. Complicated, so complicated…”

“I found my brother two years ago…a purple-eyed werewolf. I hate my bloody hands.” Daniel then stared at his hands, seeming that they were still worn by the werewolf’s blood. “Now, my purpose of being a werewolf hunter is clear. I need to protect people against the ugly monsters.”

“I believe God doesn’t want to cast you out, my dear Grey Theodore–famous purple-eyed Grey from Czech,” smiled Aaron.

A month seemed like a day. The moon was about to be full.

On the morning of full-moon day, the hunters were preparing their tools, loading their shotguns. Daniel felt excited and nervous. He recalled the memories of last month when he almost caught that bloody beast. This time, he thought to himself, he would never fail again.

Then, the mayor appeared beside him quietly, staring at Daniel and his gun.

“You are a nice hunter,” he said, looking worse than ever. His face seemed somewhat paler, “and a good friend, too. I hope you guys can stay here for a longer time. But …uh…,” a weird smile appeared on his face. He turned to everybody. “I know that you have works to do. So, farewell! My friends! I wish you good luck!”

Everybody said “farewell” or “thank you” in return, including Daniel. But when he saw Eric, he found out that this sharp-minded hunter was staring at the fatigued-looking old man with a doubtful look. He came upon Eric and asked what happened.

“There’s something strange about Aaron.” he said. “I can feel it.”

“You think so? Maybe you just worry too much”

“Maybe, or maybe not. We’ll see, then.”

As the sky became darker, everyone was more excited. They went to the forest earlier that afternoon, setting traps for that night. Everyone waited patiently, hoping that they could catch the beast this time. Time seemed to freeze; every minute was like eternity. Suddenly, a loud noise came from the east. They all went there with a beating heart. But they only found a police trapped in nets they set. It wasn’t the werewolf.

“What are you doing here?” asked Eric, angrily.

“Don’t be angry. Some villagers saw you and thought that you were up to something not good. I just come around and see if there is something wrong,” said the policeman.

“Come around?” Daniel thought to himself, “I remember that Aaron would go around the village everyday….. Oh! Oh! If he comes to the forest, he might be attacked by the monster!”

Daniel quickly ran back to the cottage. When he was about to arrive at the cottage, he saw somebody coming out secretly from the backdoor, and went in to the forest of the north.

“Would it be Aaron? But that was not the road he always takes. What is he doing?”

Out of curiosity, Daniel followed him. They walked a long way to a strangely vacant place in the woods. It was about midnight, and there Aaron stood, with his face twisted because of pain. Then he kneeled down, screaming in an aching pain, screaming in a voice of a…wolf?!

It happened so surprisingly that Daniel couldn’t believe in what he saw. But when the fearful scream became louder and scarier, he knew the truth.

His friend, Aaron, who helped them when they were in trouble, was a werewolf. He didn’t know if he should kill him. Aaron saved the hunters and offered them a shelter. He was a kind, nice man in his and every villagers eyes. Should he just catch him or trap him in a cage until morning? What about next month? He loaded his shotgun, and the dreadful face of the werewolf turned to him. It looked like he had noticed him there. Suddenly, Aaron’s words came up to his mind, “Family and love are both complicated relationships. Maybe, so does friendship. Complicated, so complicated…”

Daniel closed his eyes, held his gun tight. He knew what to do. He heard the roaring of the monster. “Just wait.” he thought.

Then he suddenly heard a voice cried out “Daniel!”. He opened his eyes and saw Eric running toward him, but so did the monster……

A gunshot along with a cream scratched the silent night.

Advice to Freshman October 24, 2008

I remember two years ago, I was a freshman who just passed the difficult exam and was looking forward to my new school, new teachers, new classmates and new challenges. Time flies, now, as a senior, I want to give you some pieces of advice to help you work through the difficulties you might encounter, since I’ve come across them before.

First of all, you should always pay attention to the teacher in class. This can surely help you memorize the texts you just learn. If you do so, you’ll find that the teacher’s voice echoes in your mind when you are taking a test. Then choosing a correct answer will be an easy task for you.

Second, you should get enough sleep and always take a nap during the noon break. Research says that getting enough sleep at night keeps your brain clear in the morning and a nap at noon makes you concentrate on what you are going to work on in the afternoon. Sleep enough so that you can have a better learning condition.

Third, read more in your free time. Reading allows people to have their own point of view, which is different from others. It can also broaden your vision toward the world. The more you read, the more you can connect with the world. Then you’ll have the ability to think independently.

Last, you should build up the habit of studying. At first beginning, you can force yourself to study at least three hours a day. Be sure to follow this rule so that you will get used to it. Once it becomes a habit, it’ll be a part of your life and you can handle your schoolwork easily.

Freshmen always meet many problems with their work. When you’re facing some trouble, try these tips above and maybe they can help you overcome your problems. I wish you have a promising future!

A Leader’s Charactor October 3, 2008

What personality traits would you think of when it comes to “leaders”? Maybe you would think of people who can manage great problems or somebody that takes the chance once he or she has one. But being a good leader is more than that. I think a good leader should have characteristics such as persuasive, understanding his or her followers need and turning words into actions.

First, a leader should know what his or her followers need. For instance, Napoleon, the hero in the eyes of most French, appeared when the people of France wanted somebody who was tough enough to lead them through the chaos of French Revolution. He gave hope to the French people at that time and led them conquer almost the whole continent.

Second, good leaders should have the talent of persuading people and make people believe in them. Like what Dr. Martin Luther King did in the black civil rights movement. He told the black people that they shouldn’t protest in a violent way and called everybody to start a boycott. He also delivered some speeches and made the black people believe that he could lead them to change the discrimination from the white.

Last, a leader must turn words into actions. For example, in the early 20th century, the Indian people didn’t want to be the colony of England but they didn’t know what to do. Then Gandhi told them to conduct the non-violent resistance to show their determination. He led them to the victory and finally they were able to establish their own country.

With all these special personality traits – knowing what your followers need, have the talent of persuading people, being able to turn words into actions – you can be a successful leader when the time comes to you!

Dear Eve:

We haven’t seen each other for a very long time. How are you doing? I’m busy studying for the exam next year. My parents are always taking good care of me and my sister is still working in the company. Everything works out fine just like before.

But something has kept bothering me for months. You know that I have to face the big exam next year and I’m worry about that. I can’t stop thinking about getting grades or disappounting my parents. I feel nervous and don’t know what to do. Can you share your opnion with me? Maybe you can give some advice about it. Write me back soon!

The Best Movie I’ve Ever Seen September 26, 2008

The best movie I’ve ever seen is “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” It describes the last part of the battle of middle earth and the evil power from Mordor. The dark lord had set a plot to make the human kind hated and separated from each other. But with the help of the wizards, elves, rangers, and, of course, the hobbits, the world of the west was finally saved.

This movie is fantastic because it presents the struggle between good and evil. I always ask myself some questions when I see this movie: What would you do when the dark time comes to you? What would you do when you got the ring? Maybe I would choose to run away, but the heroes in the movie didn’t do so. They face their doom and the darkness and fight for their freedom. Hail for the courageous hobbits, elves, and rangers! Their story will never be forgotten!

A Summary of news report September 6, 2008

Haiti has suffered a great flood because it had been hit by three storm within 21 days, and more than 200 people were killed. The need of the people there were “massive” – food, water, shelters, and any thing you can think of. Another storm – Ike - comming. Some people afraid that these terriable storms might worsen the ecomony of Haiti.

FROM BBC NEWS

Several hundred thousand people need help in Haiti, which is suffering severe flooding after being hit by a series of tropical storms, the UN says.

UN official Joel Boutroue told the BBC that the situation was likely to worsen in the coming days as another strong hurricane, Ike, approaches the region.

Three storms in less than 21 days have killed more than 200 people, Haitian officials say.

Haitian President Rene Preval has said his country faces a “catastrophe”.

The latest storm to hit Haiti was Hanna, which swirled over Haiti for four days, dumping massive amounts of rain, blowing down fruit trees and swamping tin-roofed houses.

Massive need

The port city of Gonaives bore the brunt of the storm, forcing thousands of people to seek shelter on rooftops and balconies as flood waters rose.

The BBC’s Joseph Guyla Delva, who accompanied a team from the UN’s peacekeeping mission as they flew by helicopter over the area, says many houses have been damaged or destroyed.

Agricultural land has been totally flooded, he says, and the loss of crops is set to push food costs higher.

“There is no food, no water, no clothes,” Arnaud Dumas, a pastor at a Gonaives church, told the Associated Press news agency.

“I want to know what I’m supposed to do. We haven’t found anything to eat in two, three days. Nothing at all.”

An AP reporter in the city said safe drinking water was in very short supply, and fetid carcasses of drowned farm animals were strewn in soupy floodwaters.

Help is arriving in the area, with UN troops picking people from rooftops and Spain announcing that a planeload of aid was being flown in from Panama.

But floodwaters were frustrating efforts to distribute food, the UN said.

Instability fears

Mr Boutroue, the UN co-ordinator for humanitarian aid in Haiti, told the BBC: “We’re already facing a lot of difficulty trying to respond.

“In Gonaives alone we have some 70,000 people in shelters, and around 250,000 around Gonaives City need our assistance and that of the government, and throughout the country I would say around up to 600,000 people might require our assistance.”

The storms, Mr Boutroue said, were likely to deepen further Haiti’s already extreme poverty.

“That potentially means more instability unless we can ensure an adequate response,” he said.

The UN is stepping up its aid efforts and is launching an appeal for help, Mr Boutroue said.

The British Red Cross has also announced it is launching an appeal, saying the needs of Haiti were “massive”.

Red Cross workers were also helping residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands, north of Haiti, rebuild after Hanna ripped through there on Monday.

“Our volunteers have been supporting the shelters here with food and shelter management, transporting people to hospital, and handing out tarpaulins to help keep roofs on,” said the organisation’s Clive Evans, on the islands.

“There are abandoned cars everywhere, overturned boats, uprooted trees, downed power lines and flooded roads.”

US prepares

At 0600 GMT on Friday, Hanna was about 90km (55 miles) north of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and some 790km south of Wilimington, North Carolina, the US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

There are fears it could become a hurricane by the time it hits land along the US coast on Saturday, but the storm’s uncertain path means officials are holding off ordering an evacuation.

However, a hurricane watch is in place in North and South Carolina.

Some residents of those states have already moved boats and booked inland hotel rooms.

Separately, storm Ike has strengthened rapidly into an extremely powerful Category Four hurricane in the open Atlantic, the NHC says.

However, it says it is too early to determine if Ike poses any threat to land.

Haiti was first drenched by Tropical Storm Fay, before Hurricane Gustav wreaked havoc last week, with torrential rainfall over heavily deforested and hilly terrain causing floods and mudslides.

A fascinating story – The Moonstone July 22, 2008

Detective novels are always attractive to many people throughout centries. It contains mystery, crime and fascinating plot. This story “The Moonstone”, written by ‘the father of the English detective story’ Wilkie Collins, is said to be the first and one of the best detective novels so far. It was written 20 years earlier  than the famous detective stories, Sherlock Holmes.

Wilkie collins was born in London. He studied law and worked for a tea company. It seemed that he had nothing to do with writing a novel. But he actually started writing when he was a teenager and was fond of it. The Moonstone  was one of his best work and was very popular.

The story began with the death of John Herncastle, who got the moonstone by a cruel way. He left this precious stone- or a curse- to his niece Rachel for her 18th birthday in London. And there were three Indian priests who guarded the stone came to London and tried to get it back. At night, after the birthday party, Ms.Rachel put the stone in her cabinet in her room and went to sleep. However, the stone was gone the next morning! Who stole it? Mr.Franklin(Ms.Rachel’s cousin and suitor), old Gabriel(The servantof Ms.Rachel’s family) and sergeant Cuff are going to discover the truth!

After all the investigation, they foud that Mr.Franklin was the thief! But he was unconscious of it because he had some opium given by Dr.Candy, who wanted to trickhim, and he had no idea about it! But the whole event wasn’t so easy. Outside the door that night was Mr.Ablewwhite, Ms.Rachel’s cousin. He needed a great amount of money so he tried to steal it. Then he saw Mr.Franklin taking it from the cabinet, walking toward to door. he took it and went to the jewel seller. But at the end of the story, he was murdered in a small inn.

This story was fantastic! Every plot in the story makes me excited. It seems like we’re going to discover the truth everytime Mr.Franklin and sergeant Cuff found something interesting. It make me sad when Rosanna died and worried when Ms.Rachel collapsed. Another special thing about the story is that it was consist of six people’s narrative. Each of them discribed thier own story and the next person carried on. This is the first story written by this way which I havent seen before. I like it very much !No wonder it’s one of the best detective stories so far!

The invention of the Internet has had negative effects on our civilization January 20, 2008

I agree that the invention of the Internet has had negative effects on our civilization. With the appearance of the Internet, it has brought many problems for the society. Let me explain why I agree with this opinion.

First, after the Internet has been invented, people started to rely on it to communicate with each other. Little by little, we refuse to talk to people face to face. Then, people developed “Computer language” to replace the way we used to communicate. So now, many elementary school students have serious problem about writing their article. They can not use the right words to write and their writing was out of point.

Second, the relation between people become distant and no longer just as before. When children went home, some of them go straight to their room to start their computers instead of having a chat with their parents. Some adults use Internet to go shopping instead of going to the market. The Internet has decreased the opportunity for people to meet each other. Although it seems convenient, it have still brought some trouble for people.

Finally, the Internet has created another way for the criminals to do something bad. Since the Internet has been invented, a new kind of criminal called “Haker” was also created. They spread virus from computer to computer through the Internet. People also use the Internet to steal other people’s money or spread bad things like gossips or unfounded criticisms.

The Internet has brought negative effects  for us. We rely on it to communicate instead of talking to each other, and our relationship between each other become distant. The Internet also created a new place for the criminals. So I agree that the invention of the Internet has had negative effects on our civilization

A lesson I’ve learned January 20, 2008

Have you ever heard some whisper about yourself between your friends? Gossip often hurt people more than just telling the person what you think. However, we don’t usually express our thoughts to others because we think it is good for that person. But something happened recently and changed me. Let me tell you the story.

I used to hide my feelings about others. I don’t easily tell the person what I think about his or her behavior or attitude. I thought that was the best way to protect their feelings. Usually, I kept my bad feelings inside my heart until I finally can’t stand it anymore. But it turned out to be worse than telling the truth.

Then last month, we had an English drama contest. Everybody wants to win this contest and everybody had different ideas about how to perform on the stage. But because of the bad tradition of hiding our feelings and ideas inside our mind, we didn’t express our thoughts to the director. Instead, we talked about it in private and criticize. Finally, we had an argument on the day before the contest. At first, I thought this would ruin our friendship and was very afraid, but after the argument, every problem seemed to be solved. Then I realized that maybe the solution was to say what we want to say.

Due to this event, I know that talking behind others really hurt people a lot. We should learn how to express our thoughts to others in a positive way and in the right time. Always hiding your thoughts is not the best way to protect others’ feelings. Just try to tell others what you are thinking about and exchange both’s ideas!
